 What is a christian testimony?

Philip Deacon writes and explains what a Christian's testimony is.

Testimony
"Testimony"; "witness": these words bring to mind a court scene. A witness has been put on oath to tell the truth. He or she is giving evidence (testifying) to the court. The witness is saying what happened to them or what they saw. This witness's evidence is their testimony.

A Christian's testimony is their account of how the Lord Jesus Christ is at work in their life. It may describe how the Lord Jesus Christ made that person aware of their sin and guilt before God; how they began to see their sin in its true light, as God sees it; to hate it as God hates it and to acknowledge that their sin justly deserves punishment from God. "Repentance" is the term the Bible uses to describe this acknowledgement of and change of attitude toward our sin. The Christian's testimony may go on to describe how they were brought to believe the Bible's good news (the gospel) for all sinners who repent and trust (or rely on) the Lord Jesus Christ and what He has done, rather than their own efforts, for forgiveness and acceptance with God. For the Bible tells us that, in the loving plan of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth to die. In dying He fully paid the penalty which repentant sinners, who trust Him, have incurred for their sin. "God demonstrates his own love towards us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (The Bible: Romans, i.e. Paul's letter to Christians in Rome, chapter 5 verse 8.)

A Christian's testimony may also describe how God is helping them, perhaps during a severe crisis or amid the routine of everyday life.

You may know someone who tells tall stories about themselves to impress others. A witness who did that in court would no doubt be rebuked for bragging or lying about themselves rather than sticking to the point of their evidence. In the same way a Christian's testimony should focus, not on themselves, but on the God Who has worked in their lives and on His promises to others who will also repent and trust Him.

The root of the original word that the New Testament in the Bible uses for "witness" provides us with our English word "martyr". A Christian martyr prefers to be put to death rather than to dishonour the God in Whom they trust by denying the truth about Him. The same serious concern for the glory of God and the truth of how He deals with us is the hallmark of a genuine Christian testimony.
